The panel discussion is a valuable, time-tested teaching technique used in classrooms of all types to help students understand the experiences of a particular group of people. My previous experiences facilitating successful panel discussions led me to believe that a panel would be a good method to use here. It was not. In an effort to create a panel that represented a diversity of functions and practitioners, I ended up with too many panelists and, consequently, an ineffective exercise. As the instructor and panel moderator, one has to manage the questions from the class as well as rein in the excitement and enthusiasm of the panel participants to impart their wisdom. A large panel makes that difficult. I asked the class for feedback following the inclusion of two panel discussions.

I want to start the education part of my blog with one of my very favorite teaching strategies. I have found it especially effective with 9th graders. Finally, it gives the students various different perspectives and often challenges them to question, analyze, assess, and defend their own opinion.

Active Learning Strategies
After 3 days of learning about the bureaucracy, our last day I wanted to assess student understanding in a way that was not a multiple choice test. The overall goal here was not to memorize each agency. I wanted an overall view of how the bureaucracy interacted with our every day lives. I made that clear to them because understanding the goals of the assignment are necessary for optimal student success.

Berkeley High teacher Mrs. Megan Minkin ponders every day on how she can get students to read more. Her desire to get her students reading in an attempt to enforce critical thinking, improve writing and etc. Minkin said the goal was to prove to students that there are books out there that will captivate their interest. She found that by comparing the books to dates, the teens in her high school class were able to find books that made them want to read.
I gave them a few minutes to read once the activity was over. During the five minutes they had to read after the activity, every single kid had a head in a book. When I told them time was up, several even had a hard time closing their books. Taking what I learned from the past two speed dating iterations, I tweaked the lesson slightly. After another day of watching students immersed in books, I am hopeful that I created an improved activity that sparked the interest of students and motivated them to view reading as an enjoyable pastime. As a secondary social studies teacher, I had to become extra creative in order to find ways to make learning historical content and skills fun and exciting.
I knew lectures and workbooks would keep the learner in a sedated state. So how could I bring learning to life and get students to learn without even realizing it? In this blog, I will share out my speed dating activity and how I used in my 11th grade social studies classroom. A change was made to the annual career speed dating event for Year 9 students this year when the school got an offer from the NZ Rural General Practice Network to bring 10 university students to our school. These students are studying courses ranging from optometry, dentistry, nursing and medicine. After a short presentation about the wide range of health careers and the support students from rural schools can expect to receive to make it possible for them to go into any health career.
The aim of the initiative is to get more students thinking about health careers and coming back to their own communities to work in them. After the presentation the university students set up five interactive activities which the school students participated in. The optometry students taught students about eye tests and colour blindness. Two of the medical students showed students how their knee reflexes work and student could test each others with patella hammers.
The other two medical students taught the students the correct way of CPR with the help of a life size dummy. The dentistry students made moulds for the students showing them how it is done. The nursing students taught our students to take their own pulses and also take each others blood pressures. Our school students really learnt a lot and enjoyed the hour being in a medical “career”.
