This paper assesses and reevaluates the empirical data brought forward by both sides and contributes more empirical data on parallels with Sinhala. These parallels are partly due to substrate reinforcement Siegel, of marginal structures found in Malay varieties, partly they are clear calques on Sinhala patterns. Some structures must be analysed as the result of Early Sinhala Influence during the colonial period, while for others, a later development following socio-political changes after independence is possible Late Sinhala Influence. The paper argues that SLM changes towards Sinhala at both periods can be seen as a kind of metatypy comparable to other language contact settings in Eurasia and Papua. This is true for all domains of grammar, from phonology to discourse. The features mentioned above are not found anywhere else in the Malay world, but are common among the languages of Sri Lanka, so that language contact is an explanation suggesting itself as the source, a fact that none of the researchers working on Sri Lanka Malay fails to notice. Beyond this broad generalization, things become more difficult. There are two main languages in Sri Lanka, Sinhala Indo-Aryan and Tamil Dravidian , which could have contributed to the formation of these features. The issue is complicated by the fact that Sinhala and Tamil are typologically very similar, and Sinhalese grammar is indeed closer to the Dravidian type than to its Northern Indo-Aryan cousins.

Sri Lanka has long been subject to extremist violence. While no one has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks, 24 people have been arrested. Three police were killed in their capture. These attacks are different from previous ethno-religious violence in Sri Lanka. By fomenting generalised religious hatred, they appear to have more in common with Al-Qaeda, which has sought specific political change.

Tamils, with a population of around 76 million and with a documented history stretching back over 2, years, are one of the largest and oldest extant ethnolinguistic groups in the modern world. From the 4th century BC onwards, urbanisation and mercantile activity along the western and eastern coasts of what is today Kerala and Tamil Nadu led to the development of four large Tamil political states, the Cheras , Cholas , Pandyas and Pallavas and a number of smaller states, all of whom were warring amongst themselves for dominance.
The Jaffna Kingdom , inhabited by Sri Lankan Tamils , was once one of the strongest kingdoms of Sri Lanka , and controlled much of the north of the island. Tamils were noted for their influence on regional trade throughout the Indian Ocean. Artifacts marking the presence of Roman traders show direct trade was active between Rome and southern India, and the Pandyas were recorded as having sent at least two embassies directly to Emperor Augustus in Rome.
The Pandyas and Cholas were historically active in Sri Lanka. The Chola dynasty successfully invaded several areas in southeast Asia, including the powerful Srivijaya and the Malay city-state of Kedah. The Tamil language is one of the world’s longest-surviving classical languages , with a history dating back to BCE.

The Sri Lankan government must deliver justice, truth and reparation to the families of the forcibly disappeared, Amnesty International said today, as the global human rights organization expressed solidarity with the families of the disappeared marching on 14 February in Colombo. Hundreds of family members of enforced disappeared persons from several parts of Sri Lanka are gathering in Colombo on Friday to commemorate their missing family members, and demand justice, truth and reparation by marching towards the offices of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
The authorities have also failed to protect witnesses and families seeking truth and justice, and failed to prosecute those suspected of criminal responsibility. To start with, the authorities should immediately provide information to the families of the disappeared, with detailed lists and information of persons who surrendered to the armed forces in the final phase of the armed conflict. Sri Lanka has made limited progress on the issue of enforced disappearances with the criminalization of enforced disappearances in March —thereby giving partial effect to its obligations under the International Convention for the Protection of all Persons from Enforced Disappearance—and operationalizing the Office on Missing Persons.
While some cases related to enforced disappearances are under investigation, the government, on many occasions, has appointed or promoted those suspected of crimes under international law into positions of power – signaling their indifference towards the calls of conflict victims. In Sri Lanka, Valentines day is celebrated differently by families of the forcibly disappeared. On February 14th, or ‘Missing Lovers Day’, they march in remembrance of their loved ones and to demand truth and justice.

Life revolves around the family for most Sri Lankans. In collectivist cultures such as that of Sri Lanka, the family is the first group a person becomes a member of at birth. The interests of the family are expected to come before those of the individual and loyalty such as preferential treatment is shown to fellow family members. Furthermore, the acts of an individual can impact the perception of the entire family by others.
Three or four generations often live together, with the male side of the family connecting the relations. While the mother holds a significant amount of household authority and is respected, the father or eldest son is usually the patriarch. Age is also a source of hierarchy within the household, with elders being highly respected and cared for at home by the family far into their old age. Although there is a longstanding tradition of both men and women participating in the labour force, the general trend is for men to focus on income opportunities while women focus on the domestic sphere.
Many women do participate in the paid workforce on a significant level; however, their contribution is not evenly distributed, with a high concentration of women in professions such as tea picking, garment creating and teaching.
